Power Supply Returning to Western India After Night-Long Blackout
Full power was expected to be restored by midday to the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa.
"Power is returning to normalcy already in various parts of Maharashtra even as we await reports from other states," said Ravindra Torne, spokesman for the Maharashtra state electricity board, the state-run generator and distributor.
He said essential services were already receiving uninterrupted power supply, AFP reported.
The breakdown disrupted movement of long distance trains on the western route and affected hospitals and industries in the five states.
Despite the power failure, Bombay, India's financial hub, was largely unaffected as the city gets its supply from two private companies -- TATA Power Co., LTD. and BSES LTD.
The western power grid collapsed Tuesday due to excessive drawing of around 500 mw power from Maharashtra by Madhya Pradesh, power grid Corp Chairman R.P. Singh said.
"Madhya Pradesh, which was indulging in rampant indiscipline, ignored our warnings and caused the collapse. If it has suicidal tendencies what can we do?", Singh was quoted as saying by ***The Times of India.
